Getting Started

RPG Chess Beginner Guide

Learn how turn-based RPG mechanics blend with classic chess movement. This guide covers the core loop, piece skills, and opening tips so you can win your first runs.

RPG Chess reimagines the classic board by giving every piece RPG-style stats, levels, and abilities. Instead of simply capturing, you'll trade blows, build synergies, and grow your army across roguelike runs. These steps walk you through everything a new player needs before the first checkmate.

1

Understand the Core Loop

Each run takes place on a chessboard where turns alternate as in classic chess. The twist: when one piece attacks another, combat is resolved with RPG stats — attack, defense, and HP — rather than an instant capture. Winning a fight usually requires damaging an enemy over multiple exchanges.

2

Learn Piece Movement & Skills

Pieces keep their traditional chess movement: pawns push forward, knights leap in L-shapes, bishops and rooks sweep lines, and the queen dominates the board. On top of movement, each piece has active and passive skills, such as pawn shields or knight charges, that trigger cooldowns or resource costs.

3

Level Up Your Army

Defeating enemy pieces grants experience and gold. Spend these between battles to level up pieces, unlock new skills, and upgrade stats. A well-leveled mid-tier piece is often stronger than a freshly summoned high-tier one.

4

Manage the Roguelike Run

Runs are structured as a series of encounters with choices in between — battles, shops, and events. Preserve HP on key pieces, plan a route that suits your build, and don't be afraid to skip fights your army can't handle yet.

5

Opening Tips for Your First Wins

Protect your king at all times — losing it ends the run. Develop knights and bishops early, use pawns to absorb hits and build XP, and focus upgrades on two or three core pieces instead of spreading resources thin.

Tier List

RPG Chess Pieces Tier List

Every piece ranked by strength, skill value, and roguelike consistency. Use these ratings to decide which pieces deserve your gold and upgrades.

Because RPG Chess grants every chess piece its own stats and abilities, not all units are equal. This tier list evaluates pieces on combat power, survivability, skill utility, and how consistently they perform across a full roguelike run. Ratings reflect piece roles at their typical upgrade levels.

S

Queen

Unmatched mobility and damage; carries fights once leveled and protected.

Knight

L-shape movement ignores blockers, making it the best flanker and skill trigger in the roster.

A

Rook

Long-range pressure and high defense; excellent frontline body for holding lanes.

Bishop

Diagonal reach with strong support skills; great synergy value in most formations.

B

Pawn

Weak individually but cheap, replaceable, and a reliable XP engine early in runs.

King

Mandatory for survival; decent defensive skills but must stay protected at all times.

Build Guide

RPG Chess Best Build Guide

The strongest strategies for conquering high-difficulty runs — upgrade routes, skill priorities, and how to handle roguelike randomness.

A winning run in RPG Chess comes from committing to a clear plan early. These proven build archetypes cover the main playstyles, each with an upgrade route, relic priorities, and decision rules for the random events you'll face between battles.

Aggressive

Queen Carry Build

Stack all gold and XP into the Queen, boosting attack and mobility skills first. Use knights and rooks purely as bodyguards to keep enemies off her. Prioritize relics that increase damage or action economy, and retreat the Queen from unfavorable trades — she wins wars of attrition, not one-shot duels.

Defensive

Fortress Build

Level Rooks and defensive skills to create an unbreakable wall around the King, then win by counterattacking. Take every HP and defense upgrade offered, and pick relics that heal or shield pieces after combat. This build is slow but extremely consistent on higher difficulties where aggression gets punished.

Economy

Pawn Swarm Build

Keep pawns alive and upgraded instead of sacrificing them. Cheap, mass-produced units generate XP and gold faster than any other strategy, letting you out-scale enemies by mid-run. Choose skills and relics that buff groups or refund losses, and freely trade pawns once your economy snowballs.

Strategy

Roguelike Decision Rules

Always read encounter rewards before choosing a path — prefer gold and relics early, XP mid-run, and healing late. Never spread upgrades across more than three pieces, and abandon a build only before the halfway point of a run, when pivoting is still affordable.

Classes & Units

Every Class in RPG Chess, Explained

A complete breakdown of every class in the game. Learn what each unit does, where it shines, and how to build a roster that covers all your bases.

RPG Chess blends classic chess pieces with RPG classes, turn-based combat, and roguelike progression. Each piece on your board belongs to a class with its own role, skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Understanding how these classes interact is the key to surviving demanding encounters. This guide covers every class category so you can build a balanced team instead of relying on a single overpowered unit.

Strategy Guide

RPG Chess Tips and Tricks to Raise Your Win Rate

Practical advice on resource management, positioning, skill timing, and roguelike choices. Avoid the most common mistakes that end runs early.

RPG Chess rewards players who think a few turns ahead, not just about the board but about their whole run. Between battles you'll manage a roster, pick upgrades, and choose paths through roguelike events — and small decisions compound quickly. These tips cover the fundamentals that separate struggling players from consistent winners.

Positioning

Protect Your Pawns Early

Pawns are your promotion engine. In early battles, avoid throwing them away for small trades — a promoted Pawn later in the run is worth far more than a minor advantage now.

Trading Pawns freely in the first few fights and losing late-game scaling.

Positioning

Think in Lines, Not Squares

Rooks and Queens dominate open lines. Before committing to a fight, check which files and diagonals will open up after the next exchange, and position your long-range pieces to control them.

Blocking your own Rook and Bishop lanes with careless Pawn moves.

Skill Timing

Save Skills for Turning Points

Most abilities have cooldowns that carry between turns of a fight. Hold your big heals and burst damage for the moment the enemy commits — not for chip damage in the opening exchanges.

Dumping all cooldowns in turn one and getting punished on the counterattack.

Roguelike Choices

Prioritize Economy Rewards in Early Events

Roguelike events that grant extra gold, relics, or upgrade options are usually worth more early, when compounding benefits have time to grow. Raw power picks matter more in the late game.

Taking short-term power spikes early and falling behind on resources mid-run.

Team Building

Build Around One Core Synergy

A focused roster with pieces and relics that support a single game plan — heavy frontline control, aggressive dives, or heal-and-outlast — beats a scattered collection of strong individual units.

Picking every shiny new piece without a plan, leaving your comp without a win condition.

Resource Management

Know When to Retreat a Piece

Damaged pieces that survive a battle often carry over or can be healed between encounters. Retreating a wounded Rook to heal is frequently better than forcing one more trade.

Treating every battle as a fight to the death and losing units you can't replace.
